Hello! I'll be your in-town pooler this evening as the president returns from the World Cup finals. Pool is gathering at 8 p.m. ahead of the president's arrival. Jacob Fulton Tax and Economic Policy Reporter
The president’s motorcade arrived at Newark airport at 1916. The president was up the stairs as the press vans came to a stop. We are again aboard the 747 AF1 of Qatari provenance. We should be airborne soon. Please watch for an in-flight gaggle on the brief flight back. There is no inflight wifi. 30-
At 1843 the president handed the FIFA World Cup trophy to the Spanish captain, then remained on the medal platform long enough to get in the first series of photos. 30-
The president is on the podium at midfield with FIFA president Gianni Infantino congratulating players from the two teams and hanging medals around their necks. Pool must note that Infantino is wearing a dark suit and bright white sneakers. 30-
The president walked onto the field at 1826 to a sustained chorus of boos. Ambient crowd noise was about 78 decibels. Booing brought it to 84. He is to participate in the trophy ceremony. 30-
Your pooler did not see it from our location, but stills and video saw the president chatting with Canadian PM Mark Carney in the box from which he’s watching the game. Also there was Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, as was Sec State Marco Rubio. 30-
Pool will be spending the remainder of the game in a windowless press work room. We have no visibility on the president beyond what the Fox Sports producers choose to air. We do not expect to see him again until after the game. 30-
The stadium’s large video screens at 1445 showed the president standing next to FIFA president Gianni Infantino for perhaps a second two after the singing of the US national anthem. There was no appreciable reaction from the crowd. What may been a chorus of boos from behind may have instead been yet another chant from the Argentina section where pool is situated. 30-
The president flew over the stadium aboard Marine 1 alongside an escort helicopter at 1416, with both aircraft banking to port as they passed. Few in the stadium seemed to notice. The ambient crowd noise/sound system was at 80 decibels. The passing helicopters increased that to about 84 decibels for a few seconds. 30-
The pool was brought onto the field at what appears to the Argentina section. A pre-game show was wrapping as we came out and now the field is being watered. The stands are mostly full, although a fair number appear not to have taken their seats yet. NB — The previous report, 4, was misnumbered. Report 3 was skipped and now will remain skipped going forward. 30-
Pool arrived at what FIFA is calling New York/New Jersey Stadium at 1258. Drive was uneventful and expedited by a pair of roadblocks to stop non-motorcade traffic. Pool was led past various security checkpoints to a work room set up for photographers. We are to be led onto the field momentarily. 30-
The pool was driven to the president’s golf course in Bedminster, NJ, where we were swept by Secret Service. We are now motorcading to the stadium for the World Cup final match ahead of the president’s flight there. 30-
