Backgrounder: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Visit to the White House

Visit Duration & Purpose: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is undertaking a five-day visit to the United States, primarily to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During the visit, he addressed the UN Climate Summit on Wednesday and is scheduled to deliver a formal address to the General Assembly on Friday.

Washington Stopover: Sharif will make a brief, roughly 24-hour stop in Washington, D.C., including a meeting with President Trump at the White House. Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is expected to accompany him to the Oval Office. The meeting will cover bilateral relations, regional security, global developments, and trade, according to Radio Pakistan.

White House Context: This marks Sharif's first visit to the White House. The last Pakistani prime minister to meet a U.S. president was Imran Khan in July 2019. Sharif, 74, had an informal exchange with President Trump in New York on Tuesday. Early this summer, President Trump hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir for lunch at the White House. Munir had nominated POTUS for the Nobel Peace Prize; later, Pakistan officially nominated the president for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in ending India-Pakistan war.

Political Profile: Elected for a second term in March 2024, Sharif is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Trade & Economy: The United States is Pakistan's largest export market, accounting for $8.33 billion in exports in 2022. The U.S. also remains a key source of foreign direct investment ($118.4 million) and remittances ($3.09 billion). In July 2025, the two countries signed a trade agreement, which includes a 19% U.S. tariff on Pakistani imports and U.S. involvement in developing Pakistan's oil reserves.

Defence Relations: Historically strong but weakened over the past decade, defense ties between the U.S. and Pakistan are improving, particularly after tensions during the India-Pakistan conflict earlier this year. This visit coincides with strengthened regional security arrangements, including the Saudi-Pakistan Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed on September 17, which asserts that an attack on one country is considered an attack on both.

Trump-Pakistan Context: President Trump in his first term halted financial assistance to Pakistan over terrorism concerns. This year, he played a role in de-escalating tensions during the India-Pakistan conflict. Relatioinship has improved since then.
