The VP took the stage at 9:33 a.m. after Loeffler introduced him. Vance said he got a tour of the facility before coming out.
He concluded his remarks at 9:54 a.m. and took about half a dozen questions after. He left the stage at 10:13 and motorcade is rolling back to the airport.
Remarks were carried live but here were a few highlights:
On Greenland:
Vance joked about how snowy Toledo looked from the plane and said “for a brief second, I forgot where I was coming. I opened the window and I thought the president had sent me to Greenland. Which is going well, by the way. Which is going well.”
He also joked: “I’m still shivering from the tour I got outside.”
On Minneapolis:
Vance mentioned his next stop in Minneapolis and said:
“If you want to turn down the chaos in Minneapolis, stop fighting immigration enforcement and accept that we have to have a border in this country. It’s not that hard. My ex
On the administration’s economic agenda:
The VP referred to his Ohio roots and his family’s economic struggles growing up, telling the crowd, “You know my story.”
Vance said when it comes to affordability, “We know there is still so much work to do.”
“Yes, there is an affordability crisis—one created by Joe Biden’s policies,” he said. “You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight. It takes time to fix what was broken.”
Highlights from Q + A with reporters:
On the Greenland deal:
Vance did not detail any elements of the Greenland deal but said, “The negotiations with NATO are going fine.”
Vance said Greenland matters for American national security and the missile defense system depends on Arctic security.
Vance said he was in Ohio to talk about “the great American comeback,” and said that’s why the president went to Davos.
“That’s why the president went to Davos, to say that America is open for business,” he said.
On POTUS saying this week that ICE has made some mistakes:
Vance said of his visit to Minneapolis today that, “Certainly, one of my goals is to calm the tensions.”
He added that, “Of course there have been mistakes made because you’re always going to have mistakes made in law enforcement.”
Vance said the number one way to lower mistakes is to have local jurisdictions cooperate with immigration enforcement.
He also said when answering a later question that he wants to send a message to law enforcement and ICE officers that, “We have your back.”
When discussing the Minneapolis demonstrations, said people should show their disapproval at the ballot box, not by going “to the street and assaulting federal law enforcement.”
“It’s cowardly bullshit,” he said.
At the end of his appearance, Vance said that AG Bondi called him shortly before he took the stage to tell him that they had arrested the “ring leader” of the church protests.
On talks of trilateral talks with U.S-Ukraine-Russia that Zelenskyy announced today:
He said he wouldn’t predict that anything would happen in the next few weeks because he’s been disappointed in the past when he thought they were close to peace.
“The fact that they’re sitting down and talking is progress,” he said.
He also joked that he and his wife were debating about having a fourth child and he said they needed to take advantage of the new Trump accounts and child tax credits.
There were several hundred people inside, many in winter jackets and high-vis clothing. Some are employees of Midwest Terminals.
Behind the stage was a riser with a couple dozen people, some in hard hats. Around the stage, there were two large signs that said “Lower Prices Bigger Paychecks” behind the podium and stage left. On the other side was a blue rail car with about a dozen people, including a few holding signs that said “Bigger Paychecks.”
