Good morning from foggy and snowy Baku.
A Vance spokesman sends a readout of the VP’s bilateral with the President of Azerbaijan yesterday:
“President Aliyev and Vice President Vance discussed next steps in President Trump's initiative to bring peace to Armenia and Azerbaijan. They focused on trade and prosperity, technology, and diplomatic outreach. They also spoke about next steps, including contracting and permits for the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, and confidence building measures such as the release of prisoners, U.S. investment, and regional economic integration.“
The spokesman also provided the text of the strategic partnership agreement that was signed by both leaders. I’ve attached that document in this email.
This morning, the Vice President and Second Lady visited Martyrs’ Lane, which is a national cemetery and memorial that honors those who died during Azerbaijan's breakaway from the Soviet Union and during ongoing territorial disputes with Armenia. Their motorcade arrived at the memorial at 9:03am.
The VP and Second Lady were greeted at the memorial by Elnur Mammadov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to a Vance spokesperson. They walked down a long pathway along the memorial that leads to the Shahidlar Monument, also known as the Eternal Flame monument, and then participated in a wreath laying ceremony. The VP wore a blue suit and a red tie and the Second Lady wore a grey coat over a black dress and black stilettos. No remarks were made.
The motorcade started rolling away from the memorial at 9:20am.
